On snapchat today, Kim Kardashian posted a picture of her scale. The pic, with her feet shown, clearly weighing herself, displayed the celebrity’s post baby weight – 124.6.
A few days earlier, the 35-year-old mom shared another pic that read “125.4” pounds, with the caption, “I haven’t been this in years!!! 5 lbs to go!”.
While I think it’s great that Kim has lost her pregnancy weight, which I assume took a LOT of hard work, I find her decision to post this weight loss on Snapchat a little bit concerning. I also find it a bit concerning that she’s promoting her goal of a low 120lbs.
Hear me out.
I HATE body shaming, and this is not what this post is about. She does look incredible!
My concern is that Kim has a lot of young fans and followers.
I am a 22 year old young woman, who has never had children, and I am 5 inches taller than Kim, who is 5’2. Now, I know that because I am taller, my body has different proportions than Kim, and that no woman is the same. BUT – with a VERY famous larger butt and boobs like Kim, I find her desire to be 120 lbs, a little wild to think about.
Here’s some examples of the thoughts I had after seeing this Snap:
1) How is it possible to have such a curvy body, and yet still have such a tiny waist?
2) How can she weigh the same as someone without these types of curves?
3) And basically, how the hell does she just seem to have it all?
To be honest, it 100% made me feel like shit about myself – which I’m totally embarrassed about.
Reports during her pregnancy put Kim at a weight of 190 lbs, and she openly talked about her “awful 52 lbs gain”.
These statements would put Kim at about 138 lbs pre-pregnacy.
Which means she wants to lose 18 more pounds than she was pre-baby.
That would be a weight loss of 70 pounds since giving birth to Saint, just 8 months ago.
Now, I know she was very upset with her pregnancy body, and I commend her for taking positive steps towards re-gaining her self-esteem, but I am kind of sad thinking about just how little she wants to weigh.
My fear here is that, while it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle, Kim has put so much stress on her petite frame, and has also likely put some pressure on her young fans, who see her celebrating this drastic, and very specific, weight loss goal.
Young fans, who may not look far enough into this weight gain, will think these “goals” are easily achievable and that this is what their idea of “normal” should look like.
I can almost guarantee that there are 16 year old girls, that are 120 pounds, who will look at a 35 year old Kim and say, “If she’s 120 pounds at her age, and after two kids, clearly I need to lose weight”. And while that might sound sad and dramatic, in my experience, it’s a reality.
However, one must not forget that Kim is a multi-millionaire with access to the best trainers, health professionals, and diet guides. She also has the ability to have her meals made for her, and has the stress of being in the public eye as a constant pressure to keep on track.
Kim committed to the Atkins diet and worked daily with a trainer – a huge privilege. Here’s a bit about the diet she was on:
The diet involves limited consumption of carbohydrates to switch the body’s metabolism from metabolizing glucose as energy over to converting stored body fat to energy. This process, called ketosis, begins when insulin levels are low; in normal humans, insulin is lowest when blood glucose levels are low (mostly before eating). Reduced insulin levels induce lipolysis, which consumes fat to produce ketone bodies. On the other hand, caloric carbohydrates (for example, glucose or starch, the latter made of chains of glucose) affect the body by increasing blood sugar after consumption.”
It is also important to note that: “Forbes magazine found that the sample menu from the Atkins Nutritional Approach is one of the top five in the expense category. This was due to the inclusion of recipes with some high cost ingredients such as lobster tails which were put in the book to demonstrate the variety of foods which could be consumed on the diet.”
= The more wealthy you are, with better access to these high-cost healthy foods, the better results you are likely to have on this diet.
However, dieting for those who don’t have access to these perks, is much different, and much more difficult, and I think that part needs to be talked about.
Sure, Kim has put in the physical hard work, and good for her! But not everyone can afford trainers, memberships, nor have the time in their daily schedules to make these time commitments during hectic work schedules.
We also don’t get a huge glimpse into Kim’s work out routine or her day to day real life – making it seem like these results came fairly easy to her.
I also think that claims like, being 120 lbs is where she will gain her confidence again, is a bit of a destructive message to put out into the world…
Kim however, sees this differently,
“As North gets older, she’ll start to be more aware of herself and her body… Her attitude toward her body is directly related to my own, so it’s my responsibility to make sure she understands that positive body image comes from having a healthy self-esteem,” said Kim.
I guess the point I’m really trying to get across here is that it is OK for Kim to make the decision to work hard and lose the amount of weight she wants to lose, that’s her choice, and she should be proud of herself – BUT, and this is a huge BUT, I just wish she would keep these very specific numbers off of Snapchat – for others to gawk at and feel sorry for themselves over.
While Kim’s fit lifestyle IS something to celebrate, I very much hope that North, and Kim’s followers do not feel the pressure to be an exact number on a scale – in order to be happy/ to have self-esteem.
